My question has always been though would adopting western understanding of prosperity destroy the entire social fabric and solidarity that took so long to be built? I really admire the solidarity and community aspects of life in Senegal. I am a little ambivalent about some suggested solutions to fight "poverty". Is wealth only measured in dollars and cents (e.g. the usual 50% of the population lives with less than two dollars a day which in my opinion is meaningless)? I know in Senegalese culture, you might a millionaire but if that "wealth" is not shared it is not considered wealth at all.

Great observation.
