You Should Support Empowering Years For A Reason You Didn’t Know (English & Español)

Why did you take a gap year?

Why wouldn’t I if I could?

I get asked this question so many times because many believe “education” equals sitting down in a classroom for 12, 16, 19 years, and that that’s only how you can gain important skills, making gap years a lazy thing for confused people. Wrong. The less known definition of education is “an enlightening experience” and that can happen anywhere. That needs to happen everywhere. Understanding how to study is just as important as learning to be open minded. Mastering statistics can be just as necessary as knowing how to listen to others, or to yourself. And the latter ones don’t always happen in a classroom.

I don’t like the term gap year; this year is not a gap, or a bridge. Calling it with any of those terms implies that something was broken, that there was an empty space and this is not the case. This year is a perfect continuation of my growth and if I had to choose a term, I would call it empowering year.

When the current world situation is discussed, many, myself included, believe that the answer to improve long term lies in a better education. However, the term “better” comes with many interpretations. Better usually means more cleaner bigger nicer schools. More subjects. More ways to make people get to tertiary education. For me, although important, those are not the only “better”s. When something doesn’t work, and we try to fix it, and it doesn’t work again, do we try to fix it the same way? Nope, we look for new ways. Well, here’s a new way that may help.

Maybe, empowering years are the future. Maybe people need this “empty” time to understand who they are and what to become, to understand what they can achieve without the pressure of being represented by numbers, to take time to get to know others, or to spend time with their families, or to develop their empathy and curiosity (which by the way lack so much these days). Maybe, these are the ways in which education should be made “better”.

And this is why I believe you should donate to Global Citizen Year.

It’s not about me taking part in the programme, or about future fellows being able to participate. It’s about much more than that. As I see it, by donating, you’re supporting the idea of empowering years. The idea that learning can happen everywhere and that personal development is as important to become a good member of society as it is to “grow up”, “graduate” and “get a job”.

Maybe you don’t fully support the idea of Global Citizen Year. As I see it that only gives you more reasons to support it because how many other programmes offer empowering year scholarships? So if you don’t agree then donate even more, donate so that a better programme can be built, so that the idea of empowering years can become stronger and so that more opportunities will be available for others, for future generations, all over the world, to help reshape the idea of better education.

Here’s my campaign https://donate.globalcitizenyear.org/fundraise?fcid=624964 which is one of the ways in which you can help make the concept of empowering years to keep growing, but if you want to know other ways, please let me know.

No, buscamos nuevas formas.
